Ordering Coffee in Lisbon: A Guide to 'Uma Bica' vs 'Um Garoto

Ordering coffee in Portugal is a cultural ritual. Unlike in many other countries, you won't just ask for "a coffee" – you need to be specific!

1. Uma Bica / Um Café

This is your standard espresso. If you are in Lisbon, ask for "uma bica". In Porto, it's "um cimbalino". Everywhere else, just "um café" works perfectly.

2. Um Galão

Similar to a latte, this is served in a tall glass with about 1/4 coffee and 3/4 foamed milk.

3. Um Abatanado

Similar to an Americano. It's an espresso with extra hot water, served in a larger cup.

4. Um Pingo / Um Garoto

An espresso with a drop of milk. "Garoto" is used more for a weaker coffee with milk for children (hence the name "garoto" meaning "boy" or "kid").

5. Um Café Cheio

An espresso cup filled to the top. It's not watered down like an Abatanado, just let run longer from the machine.

Bonus Tip

Always say "por favor" (please) and "obrigado/a" (thank you) when ordering!
