How to Order a Beer in Portugal: Imperial vs. Fino
Published on 2026-01-23

If you sit down at a terrace in Lisbon and ask the waiter for "uma cerveja" (a beer), they will understand you, but they will instantly know you are a tourist. In Portugal, ordering a draft beer is a regional art form.
Here is how to order like a local, depending on which city you are in.
In Lisbon: Ask for an "Imperial"
In Lisbon and the south of Portugal, a standard draft beer (usually 20cl) is called an Imperial.
- The Phrase: "Queria uma imperial, se faz favor." (I would like an imperial, please.)
- The Brands: You will typically be served Sagres (from the South).
In Porto: Ask for a "Fino"
If you travel north to Porto and order an "Imperial," you might get a confused look. Up north, the same glass of draft beer is called a Fino.
- The Phrase: "Um fino, por favor."
- The Brands: You will likely be served Super Bock (from the North). The rivalry between Sagres and Super Bock is legendary!
Sizes Matter: Caneca vs. Panaché
- Uma Caneca: If you want a large beer (50cl / a pint), ask for a Caneca. This word works in both the North and South.
- Um Panaché: This is beer mixed with 7-Up or Sprite. It's very popular on hot summer days as a lighter, sweeter option.
