Practice Portuguese vs Pimsleur vs PortuTalk: Which Course Fits You?

You've decided to learn European Portuguese, which already rules out half the internet. You search for options and end up with three tabs open: Practice Portuguese, Pimsleur and PortuTalk. They all claim to teach the Portuguese spoken in Portugal, they look nothing alike, and every review you find was written by someone with an affiliate link.

So here's our comparison of Practice Portuguese vs Pimsleur, with PortuTalk included. One disclosure first: PortuTalk is us. Read our section with that in mind. We've tried to be fair to the other two, because they're both good, and the honest answer for many learners is "more than one of these".

What Is Practice Portuguese Best At?

Practice Portuguese is the long-standing specialist in European Portuguese. It was started by a Canadian learner, Joel, who couldn't find materials that weren't Brazilian, and a Portuguese co-founder, Rui. It has focused on Portugal's Portuguese ever since.

Its strength is native listening material, and lots of it:

  • The podcast, which is how many learners first find it.
  • Shorties, short native dialogues and texts, most around one to three minutes long. They're good for training your ear on real Portugal speech in small doses.
  • The Learning Studio, interactive structured lessons running from beginner to upper-intermediate (A1 to B2), with video and subtitled dialogues.
  • Smart Review, a spaced-repetition tool where you save phrases and review them as flash cards, quizzes or in an audio-only mode.

The podcast, the Shorties audio and the written Learning Notes are free. Full access (transcripts, the Learning Studio, Smart Review) requires a paid membership. The style is calm and content-led rather than game-led. Some learners love that, and others find their motivation fades without a nudge.

Best for: learners who want a deep library of real Portugal audio and are happy to pay for it, especially in the A2–B2 stretch where listening becomes the main challenge.

What Is Pimsleur Best At?

Pimsleur is the veteran of audio-led courses, and it offers a dedicated Portuguese (European) course as well as a Brazilian one, so check which one you're buying.

The method has hardly changed in decades, because it works: 30-minute lessons of call-and-response audio. A narrator prompts you, you say the answer aloud, a native speaker gives the model answer, and earlier material comes back at spaced intervals until it sticks. Each level is about 30 lessons. The app adds flash cards and short practice games such as Quick Match and Speed Round. Because lessons work with your eyes free (the app supports CarPlay and Android Auto), Pimsleur is ideal for your commute.

Its strengths are pronunciation and speaking confidence. You speak aloud in every lesson from the first day, which most apps don't make you do. The trade-offs are pace and breadth. Thirty minutes covers a fairly small amount of vocabulary, there's limited reading and writing, and you can't skim ahead. Pimsleur is paid, with a subscription or one-off level purchases.

Best for: commuters, auditory learners, and anyone whose real fear is opening their mouth.

Where Does PortuTalk Fit?

PortuTalk is free, gamified and European-Portuguese-only. Concretely:

  • Short structured lessons built around real Portugal situations (cafés, pharmacies, the bank, viewing a flat), with a placement test so you don't repeat what you already know.
  • Natural-sounding European Portuguese audio for lesson phrases (a pt-PT voice, not robotic text-to-speech), plus listening, matching and sentence-building exercises.
  • A game loop: XP, daily streaks, a swallow mascot, and swallows, our version of lives, which run down when you make mistakes and refill over time. It's the Duolingo-style loop, with Portugal's Portuguese.
  • Free public lessons at /lessons, which you can try with no account.

The core is free and supported by ads. An optional Plus membership removes the ads and gives unlimited swallows. Our weaknesses: we're young, and the catalogue focuses on beginner levels while it grows. We also don't yet have a dedicated speaking exercise, so for now, you'll have to repeat the audio clips aloud yourself. (That's on our roadmap.)

Best for: beginners who want a daily habit, learners who are motivated by streaks and XP, and anyone who wants to start without paying.

Which One Should You Choose?

Start with the question of what's stopping you right now.

  • "I can't get myself to study regularly." Pick the one with a game loop. Every day you study counts for more than how good the method is, and streaks really do help.
  • "I can read it, but I can't understand anyone." That's a listening problem, and Practice Portuguese is built for it. European Portuguese vowel reduction takes many hours of real audio to get used to.
  • "I freeze when I have to speak." Pimsleur makes you produce answers out loud, under a bit of time pressure, from the first lesson.
  • "I'm moving soon and need survival Portuguese fast." Go for situation-based lessons first (ordering, appointments, renting), then add listening.

If you've come from Duolingo and only just realised it was teaching you Brazilian Portuguese, our post on Duolingo and its European Portuguese alternatives covers the switch, including the wider list of options beyond these three.

Can You Combine Them?

Yes, and we'd recommend it. These tools don't really compete. They train different skills:

  • PortuTalk daily (10–15 minutes) for structure, vocabulary and the habit.
  • A podcast on walks, whether it's Practice Portuguese's or another European Portuguese show, for listening.
  • Pimsleur in the car, if you drive or have a long commute, for speaking aloud.

The free versions of all this cost nothing: PortuTalk's lessons plus Practice Portuguese's free podcast and Shorties audio make a solid starter set without a subscription. Add paid tools when you know which skill is holding you back. How much difference this makes over months is something we worked out in how long it takes to learn European Portuguese. Mixing input and output speeds things up much more than doubling down on one app.

Quick Questions

Is Pimsleur's European Portuguese course actually European?

Yes. Pimsleur sells a separate Portuguese (European) course alongside its Brazilian one. Check the product name before you buy, because the two are easy to mix up.

Is Practice Portuguese worth paying for?

If listening is your bottleneck and you'll use it regularly, it's one of the best-made resources for European Portuguese. Use the free podcast and Shorties audio for a few weeks first. If you keep coming back to them, the membership will likely pay off.

Is PortuTalk really free?

Yes, the core lessons are free and supported by ads, and our public lessons need no account at all. Plus is optional and removes ads and the swallow limit. You never need it to keep learning.

Which is best for the CIPLE A2 citizenship exam?

None of them alone. The exam tests listening, reading, writing and speaking. A structured course gives you grammar and vocabulary, a native audio library trains the listening section, and speaking aloud regularly (with Pimsleur, a tutor or a patient friend) prepares you for the oral.
